What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy is an alternative to injections, medications, and for some, surgery. Shockwave therapy is a fast, economical, and long-lasting option to deal with your chronic pain.
Shockwave therapy provides acoustic waves, or strong energy pulses, that are applied to the pain points within your body. These short bursts of energy, also known as pulses, accelerate the healing process within your body by breaking down scar tissue and adhesions and enhancing blood circulation to the damaged tissue, increasing blood flow while reducing pain and inflammation and promoting tissue healing.
What Injuries can be treated with Shockwave Therapy?
- Foot pain, including heel spurs, Plantar Fasciitis
- Achilles tendonitis
- Neck, arm, and shoulder pain, including tennis and golfer’s elbow and rotator cuff calcification
- Bursitis of the shoulder, elbows, and hip
- Leg – patella tendonitis, shin splints, and Achilles tendinitis
- Back pain
- Sports injuries
What does Shockwave Therapy Feel Like?
For most daily pain is a part of life so treatments can be described as minor discomfort. As therapy treatments average 5 to 10 minutes in duration, most patients are able to adapt to the sensation of the shock waves, however, if you are feeling a higher level of pain or discomfort, your Therapist will be able to adjust the intensity of the treatment.
What Will I Feel Like After my Treatment?
Many feel pain relief immediately following their treatment. However, for some, tenderness and/or soreness in the treated area may be experienced and may last for a few hours to several days. Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications or cold therapies for your discomfort as your body is using it’s own healing mechanisms from the shockwaves for healing. Should you not be able to handle the pain after a treatment over the counter Tylenol may be taken.
Is Shockwave Therapy Right For Me?
Shockwave Therapy provides a high success rate, requiring, on average, 3 to 5 visits to find long-lasting pain relief with your body continuing to heal for up to 6 to 12 weeks after your last session. And an added bonus is that most Extended Health Plans cover the cost of Shockwave Therapy.
